On Thursday, April 20th, EforAll South Coast held a Pitch Contest at the Global Learning Charter School, featuring ideas from all aspects of business in the South Coast region. Seventeen entrepreneurs came to present their businesses at the tabling session—where fellow entrepreneurs, guests, and members of the community engage and provide feedback about their ideas—which included everything from a movie showcasing New Bedford, to 4-D printed surfboards. Six of the business, were preselected to give a two-and-a-half minute pitch for cash prizes. There were two additional presenters chosen that night. The first was selected by those in attendance by voting for their favorite idea from the tabling session. The second was a “wild card,” which was an idea selected at random. Judges listening to each pitch, scored based on the clarity of the idea and presentation of the entrepreneur. The presenters were asked to focus on the following questions: what was the opportunity that led to the idea, who is the customer/market, how will it be sustainable as a business or non-profit, and how will the prize money be used. The judges included:
- Rosemary Gill from the Zeiterion Theater
- Steve Martins from City Council
- Sarah Furtado of Makeshift Studios and Hippo
- Jeremiah Hernandez of EforAll.
