Johanne Brown always loved cooking, a passion she inherited from her mother, who ran a small food shop in Jamaica. She decided to join forces with her sister, who was formerly in banking, to start their own food business when they heard about available space in Provincetown’s Courtyard Mall. In 2022, they opened Mean Burgers Ptown, serving creative and flavorful burgers with a unique twist hoping to bring something new and delicious to the community.
While they knew about food, Johanne and her family knew they didn’t fully grasp the intricacies of operating a company. A mentor encouraged Johanne to apply to the EforAll Business Accelerator, which introduced her to the fundamentals of bookkeeping, pricing, and business strategy as well as a network of supporters who continue to inspire her. According to Johanne, “My favorite part of the program was meeting other entrepreneurs. They were incredibly supportive—if we needed something, someone always had a resource or connection to help us.”
Mean Burgers Ptown is thriving, and in addition to its pop-up location, it is expanding and opening a brick-and-mortar store in the Cape. Her revenue almost doubled in 2024, reaching $500,000, and she expects it to grow even more this year. “EforAll really put us out there. It helped us grow, not just as a business, but as entrepreneurs,” she said.
