In 2012, DeSean Scales started taking photos as a hobby without big aspirations. After the deaths of his mother and uncle in 2020, photography became a way for him to connect with others and find happiness through storytelling, starting with portrait sessions for families. Before long, DeSean founded DScales Photo Lab (DSPL), offering professional photography services for small and medium-sized businesses in the Berkshires.
Like many self-taught entrepreneurs, DeSean soon realized that running a business required more than creative talent. “Learning to use a camera is hard, but running a business? I knew I needed real help,” DeSean said. He wanted to understand pricing, pitching, and the legal aspects of running a company, leading him to apply to the EforAll Business Accelerator.
The accelerator gave him knowledge and a support network of like-minded entrepreneurs. The experience of collaborating with peers and guidance from his mentors pushed him to think more strategically. He said his mentors were constantly challenging him to think outside the box.
Since graduating, DeSean’s confidence as a business owner has soared. He has refined his pitch, a skill that recently allowed him to successfully present his business to Senator Elizabeth Warren at a roundtable event. “Thanks to EforAll, I had my pitch ready and hit a home run,” DeSean said proudly. His business has since seen a significant boost, generating $7,000 in revenue in just three months after the program, compared to the $800 he earned six months before.
