Haciendo Accesibles y Divertidas las Artes Mexicanas
Hace once años, Maribel Arredondo se mudó a Colorado desde Monterrey, México, donde dejó atrás su vida como dentista para buscar un nuevo comienzo. Su amor por el arte mexicano y la necesidad de encontrar empleo fueron las principales fuerzas que la impulsaron a fundar Curious Paper, que ofrece talleres familiares de artes populares como piñatas mexicanas, esculturas (alebrijes) y papel maché. Se sintió motivada para presentarse en el Acelerador de Negocios en Longmont después de ganar un premio en el Concurso Lanza Tu Idea. Según Maribel, “necesitaba estructurar más mi negocio y darle formalidad. Sin una buena base y mentores, puede ser muy difícil crecer”.
Volver a las aulas y aprender cosas nuevas cada día fue muy divertido. Todas las relaciones y red de contactos que adquirió fueron muy valiosas para ampliar sus servicios y captar nuevos clientes. Con el apoyo de sus mentores, pudo llevar su negocio al siguiente nivel.
Desde que se graduó en EparaTodos, Curious Paper ha organizado cuatro talleres al mes para alrededor de 15 familias cada uno. Y Maribel está desarrollando asociaciones con escuelas e institutos de arte para llegar a aún más familias. “El apoyo de EparaTodos y todo lo que hacen para ayudar a los emprendedores es increíble. Siento que nos hemos convertido en una gran familia y estoy muy contenta de haber participado”, afirma.

Eleven years ago, Maribel Arredondo moved to Colorado from Monterrey, Mexico, where she left behind her life as a dentist to pursue a fresh start. Her love for Mexican art and the need to find employment were the major forces that drove her to start Curious Paper, which offers family workshops on popular Mexican arts such as piñatas, sculptures (alebrijes), and paper-mâché. She felt empowered to apply for Longmont’s Spanish language Business Accelerator after she won a prize in the community’s EparaTodos Pitch Contest. According to Maribel, “I needed to give my business more structure and make it formal. Without a good foundation and mentorship, it can be really hard to grow.”
Being back in a classroom and learning new things every day was a lot of fun. All the relationships she built and the networking were extremely valuable for expanding her services and acquiring new clients. With the support of her mentors, she was able to bring her business to the next level.
Since graduating from EparaTodos, Curious Paper has been doing 4 workshops per month for about 15 families each. And Maribel is developing partnerships with schools and art institutes to reach even more families. “The support of EparaTodos and everything they do to help entrepreneurs is amazing. I feel we became this big family, and I’m so happy I applied for it,” she said.
