Chief baking officer launches Wicked Awesome biz from Marblehead home

Sheryl Perlow learned how to run a brownie business from scratch and has become a coast to coast hit

Sheryl Perlow has always loved baking – and she’s always been good at it. When her son was in high school, she discovered that he’d been selling the brownies she packed in his lunch every day to classmates since sixth grade.

Years later, Sheryl started selling the brownies herself.

“I don’t think there’s a better brownie than mine,” she said with a smile.

Perlow is the founder, owner, and chief baking officer at Wicked Awesome Browniehttps://www.wickedawesomebrownie.com/ which she runs out of her home in Marblehead. She launched the business in 2017, but it really took off in March 2020 when the pandemic hit and she lost her full-time job.

Perlow created her original recipe over time, playing with different ingredients, measurements, and baking times until she got it just the way she wanted it.

“It’s hard to keep them on the shelves”

Since March 2020, Perlow has tripled sales and now ships her Wicked Awesome Brownies across the country. You can find them at Shubie’s, Evan’s, and local farmers’ markets. She also sells to clients at Boston and New York hospitals, Metro Credit Union, M.I.T., Sensational Travel, MITRE Corporation, and more. You’ll see her brownies at weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, and other catered events.

“Honestly, it’s one of the best-selling items in our store,” said Shubie’s manager Doug Shube. “It’s hard to keep them on the shelves. People are crazy about them.”

The process still starts at home where she typically whips up 400-800 brownies a week.
